Know more about RAIN RFID and UHF RFID

2025-06-18

UHF RFID (Ultra-High Frequency Radio Frequency Identification) is a technical term for wireless radio frequency identification technology that operates in the 860-960 MHz frequency band and complies with the globally accepted ISO/IEEE standards (such as ISO/IEC 18000-63).

RAIN RFID is the marketing brand name for UHF RFID, which was proposed and promoted by AIM Global (Automatic Identification and Mobility) in 2014 to unify the brand image, similar to the naming of wireless local area networks (WLAN) by Wi-Fi. The word RAIN is derived from the abbreviation of "RAdio frequency Identification" and also symbolizes the "cloud" transmission of data.

Both follow the same international standards (such as EPC Gen2) and support long-distance reading (usually 1-10 meters, depending on the environment and antenna power). In most cases, passive tags are used (no batteries are required) and are powered by the RF energy of the reader.

Comparison with other RFID
LF RFID (low frequency 125 kHz): short distance (centimeter level), used for animal tracking, access control cards.

HF RFID (high frequency 13.56 MHz): medium distance (~1 meter), used for NFC, payment, smart cards.

RAIN/UHF RFID: long distance, high-speed reading, suitable for large-scale scenarios such as supply chain.

Specific application scenarios of RAIN/UHF RFID: logistics and supply chain management, retail inventory management, healthcare, smart manufacturing, etc.

Logistics and supply chain management: RAIN RFID can be used to achieve real-time monitoring and tracking of logistics and supply chains. By implanting RFID tags on objects, the location, status and transportation history of items can be accurately recorded, improving the visibility and efficiency of the entire supply chain.

Retail: In the retail industry, RAIN RFID can be used for inventory management, anti-theft and improvement of shopping experience. Merchants can grasp the inventory status of goods in real time, reduce the risk of theft, and provide customers with a more convenient shopping experience, such as self-service checkout.

Healthcare: In healthcare, RAIN RFID helps track and manage medical devices and drugs, ensuring that patients receive the right treatment. In addition, it can be used for patient identity verification and medical record management.

Smart Manufacturing: In manufacturing, RAIN RFID can be used to monitor and optimize production processes. By using RFID tags on the production line, parts and products can be tracked in real time, improving production efficiency and reducing error rates.
